The Four Elements Within, or The Wild Guru of Kaos (2007)
Brazil, 2007, 70 min, Color & B&W

From São Paulo all the way to Pirenópolis and Rio de Janeiro, director André Martinez sets out on a creative journey with singer and composer Jorge Mautner and his longtime partner Nelson Jacobina. A singular figure in Brazilian culture, Mautner is known for his philosophy of “Kaos” — a visionary synthesis of science, mysticism, music and radical cultural mixing that has influenced generations of artists and thinkers in Brazil.

They move from the big city into the interior of the country and back to the metropolis, but the journey is not as simple as it might seem. The interior becomes a plunge into the Brazilian soul — and Brazil, in turn, expands into the entire world. Brazil — Black, white, Indigenous — unfolds amid mythology, science, Western and Eastern philosophy, music and poetry: “leaping neurons” or “sailboats of dazzling light.”

Mautner embraces an anthropophagic approach to everything, finding lessons in water and its ceaseless movement. Myth or science? Sacis and curupiras, flying saucers, neuroscience, quantum physics, atoms, electrons, high technology, breathtaking landscapes, favela communities and the law all coexist.

This is Brazil distilled through Mautner’s prophetic voice — a call that echoes across worlds: “Rascals, repent.”
